Microsoft has been improving the taskbar with every version of Windows as it’s one of the busiest areas of Windows operating system. In Windows 10, Microsoft has added a couple of new features to taskbar but the taskbar is not transparent with default settings.

Talking about new features on taskbar, firstly, there is a large search box on the taskbar in Windows 10. The search box, which appears right to the Start button, is home to the newly introduced digital personal assistant Cortana.
Not only does the search box on the taskbar allows you launch files and programs on your PC, but also allows you search the web using Microsoft’s Bing search engine. Those who prefer Google search can follow our workaround to enable Google search in Windows 10 taskbar search box.
Secondly, the system tray area of taskbar includes an icon to access the new action center. The all new date and time flyout is also another nice addition to the taskbar, and more importantly, it goes very well with the new design language of Windows 10.
Transparent taskbar in Windows 10
While Windows 10 supports transparency in Start menu, taskbar and action center, it’s turned off by default. We have already shown how to make Start menu transparent in Windows 10 with or without the help of third-party tools. In this guide, we are going to discuss how to make taskbar transparent in Windows 10 without using third-party tools.
NOTE: As you can see in the above picture, turning on transparency for taskbar doesn’t make the taskbar fully transparent unlike in previous Windows versions. You can only enable or disable transparency but can’t change the transparency level in Windows 10. For that, you need to go for third-party utilities.
IMP: To make the taskbar fully (100%) transparent, please refer to our how to make the Windows 10 taskbar fully transparent guide.
Make Windows 10’s taskbar transparent
Step 1: The first step is to open Settings app as Start menu and taskbar settings are available only in the Settings app.
To open Settings app, open Start menu, click Settings icon (see below picture). Alternatively, you can quickly open the Settings app using Windows + I keyboard shortcut.
Step 2: Once Settings app is launched, click Personalization.
Step 3: In the left-side, click Colors option. On the right-side, turn on the option labelled Make Start, taskbar, and action center transparent.

Note: As you probably have observed, enabling transparency for taskbar also makes Start menu and action center transparent. For now, there is no software that can enable transparency only for taskbar in Windows 10. We will let us know with a new guide as well as update this guide if and when there is a software to do so.

The taskbar in Windows 10 is highly configurable, and Windows 10 already includes an option in its personalization settings to make the taskbar transparent. But, with a little Registry magic, you can enable a setting that gives the taskbar an even higher level of transparency.
Make the Windows 10 Taskbar More Transparent by Editing the Registry
To make your Windows 10 taskbar more transparent, you just need to make an adjustment to one setting in the Windows Registry.
Standard warning: Registry Editor is a powerful tool and misusing it can render your system unstable or even inoperable. This is a pretty simple hack and as long as you stick to the instructions, you shouldn’t have any problems. That said, if you’ve never worked with it before, consider reading about how to use the Registry Editor before you get started. And definitely back up the Registry (and your computer!) before making changes.
Open the Registry Editor by hitting Start and typing “regedit.” Press Enter to open Registry Editor and give it permission to make changes to your PC.
In the Registry Editor, use the left sidebar to navigate to the following key:
Next, you’re going to create a new value inside the
Advanced
subkey. Right-click the Advanced
subkey and choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name the new value UseOLEDTaskbarTransparency
.Now, double-click the new
UseOLEDTaskbarTransparency
value in the right pane to open its properties page. In the “Value data” box, change the value to 1 and then click OK.After making the change, you can close the Registry Editor. To have the change take effect, you can either restart your computer or you can open up the Color tab on your Personalization settings (Windows+I > Personalization > Color) and toggle off and back on any of the settings in the “Choose a color” section.
Below, you can see a comparison of the regular transparency setting and the high transparency setting you’ve just configured in the Registry.
If you want to turn the high transparency setting back off, just go back into the Registry and either set the
UseOLEDTaskbarTransparency
value to 0 or delete the value altogether. You’ll then need to restart Windows or toggle one of the color settings again to force the change.Download Our One-Click Registry Hacks
If you don’t feel like diving into the Registry yourself, we’ve created a couple of registry hacks you can use. The “Enable High Taskbar Transparency” hack creates the
UseOLEDTaskbarTransparency
value and sets it to 1. The “Restore Default Taskbar Transparency” hack sets the value back to 0. Both hacks are included in the following ZIP file. Double-click the one you want to use and click through the prompts. When you’ve applied the hack you want, restart your computer or toggle one of the color settings to force the change.RELATED:How to Make Your Own Windows Registry Hacks
These hacks are really just the
Explorer
subkey, stripped down to the UseOLEDTaskbarTransparency
value we talked about in the previous section and then exported to a .REG file. Running either of the hacks sets that value to the appropriate number. And if you enjoy fiddling with the Registry, it’s worth taking the time to learn how to make your own Registry hacks. And that’s it. If you prefer a higher level of transparency on your Windows 10 taskbar, this fairly simple Registry hack is all you need.

Coming from Windows XP, the jump to Windows 7 was a massive one. It provided a fresh look on the Windows Operating System and offered a lot of background and backend improvements made Windows 7 just as popular as Windows XP (Sorry, Windows 8 and Windows Vista). But the best thing about Windows 7 is how it looked. It looked modern, it looked sleek. Most of that look is credited to the transparent taskbar at the bottom of your screen. Carrying over the UI of Windows Vista, the transparent taskbar was part of the “Aero Glass” transparency look, and you might agree that it looked awesome. But you might experience that your taskbar is not transparent. Well, here’s how to make the Taskbar Transparent on Windows 7.
Requirements
You have to make sure that these requirements are met, otherwise, your PC might not be able to run Aero efficiently.
- Activated Windows 7
- A capable video card
- Updated Video Card Drivers
Essentially, what you’ll need is just enough power and up to date drivers. You can download updated drivers at your video card manufacturer’s website or you can click on the links below.
How to Make the Taskbar Transparent on Windows 7
If you’ve already got all the requirements, then it’s time to get into it!
How To Make Taskbar Transparent In Windows 7
- Click the start menu and type in “Aero”. Options will appear and one of them is “Find and fix problems with transparency and other visual effects”. Click on that.
- A troubleshooter will appear. Just keep clicking on next and it will identify if there are any issues that you will encounter when you enable transparency. If it finds any issues, the troubleshooter will attempt to fix it. Once there are no longer any issues, then we can proceed with the next steps.
- Right-click your desktop. A set of menu options should appear. Click on Personalize.
- A new window should appear that will be showing you your currently installed themes. Click any of the Aero themes for an instant change of your desktop.
- If you like the way your current desktop looks right now and you just want to change the transparency, click on Window Color at near the bottom of the window.
- In this page, you can change the color of your Windows Border, Start Menu, and Taskbar. You can just click on White. After that, make sure that Enable Transparency is ticked.
- Click on Save Changes
- Done! Your Taskbar and other borders should be transparent now.
In Brief
Windows 7 might already be old news (it’s 9 years old! How time flies!) but it’s still one of the best looking Operating Systems. Personally, I’d pick Windows 7 over Windows 10 any day. And if you do happen to have a computer with Windows 7 installed and you want to have a very clean look on the desktop, then simply follow the steps detailed above. Your desktop will be looking fresh in no time! If you experience problems, simply run the troubleshooter and make sure that your drivers are up to date.

The Taskbar of Windows is always considered as a great feature since it helps users pin important or most used programs, show a search bar, show date/time, and so on. By default, the Taskbar on Windows 10 is colorless. Although Windows 10’s Settings panel comes with few options and there are some Registry tweaks that let you change the color of Taskbar, it is quite difficult to make the Taskbar blurry or transparent. But there are two simple tools called TranslucentTB and TaskbarTools that can help you do this.
Make Taskbar transparent in Windows 10
Regarding the features of TranslucentTB for Windows, this is designed to do a very specific task. For example, it makes the Taskbar completely transparent or blurry. It doesn’t matter what settings you are using on your Windows PC; it will overwrite it as soon as you turn it on. Also, it does support multi-monitors. What that means is it does the job even when you have more than one monitor setup. Besides, you can run this program from the command line too. Moreover, it is also possible to change the appearance right from Taskbar.
To get started with this tool, at download and unzip the zipped folder. Following that, you will get a file called TranslucentTB.exe. Double-Click on it to run. After that, you will find a change as in the following picture.
I am using a black wallpaper so the effect may not be clear – but look at the Start button, and you will see what I mean.
First, it makes the Taskbar “Clear,” according to the tool’s language. 60 minutes ray gun. In simple words, it makes your Taskbar transparent. However, if you do not want a transparent Taskbar but instead want a blurry Taskbar, you can click on the TranslucentTB icon visible in the system tray, and select Blur.
This will make the Taskbar blurry.
If you like transparent Taskbars and Start Menu, TranslucentTB is the tool you want. Go get it from Github. This version is also available freely on the Microsoft Store.
By downloading it from the Microsoft Store for free, you benefit from background auto-updates for future releases and settings sync between devices at no additional cost.
TaskbarTools is another free portable tool that can make your Taskbar fully transparent and add a blurry effect. You can download it also from Github.
If you wish to do this manually, open Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:
On the left side, create a DWORD, name it UseOLEDTaskbarTransparency and give it a value of 1.
Hope you like your new taskbar look!
